The study of mathematics at Solomon Schechter Day School enables students to become competent mathematicians who actively discover essential knowledge and skills and who use critical thinking to solve relevant and complex problems.  Students are given the opportunity to explore the importance of mathematics in everyday life and to develop their ability to communicate mathematically and think independently.

Math education at Solomon Schechter Day School:

  • Is research- and inquiry-based
  • Emphasizes the five strands of mathematical proficiency including reasoning, applying, understanding, computing and engaging
  • Includes focus on the core mathematical areas including: data analysis and probability; patterns, functions, and change; geometry; measurement; and number and operations
  • Encourages students to discover that more than one process yields the correct answer, works every time, and is efficient
  • Integrates reading and writing
  • Fosters discourse and reflective thinking skills
  • Centers around collaboration
  • Helps students make sense of mathematical ideas

Our student mathematicians grow in their ability to:

  • Engage in in-depth investigations in core mathematical concepts
  • Draw conclusions based on hands-on experiences
  • Apply previously learned information to analyze a problem and suggest solutions
  • Participate in classroom discussions
  • Find more than one solution to many of their mathematical problems
  • Develop their own strategies and approaches based on their knowledge and understanding of mathematical relationships
  • Choose from a variety of concrete materials and appropriate technology including calculators, as a natural part of their everyday mathematical work
  • Express their mathematical thinking through drawing, writing and talking
  • Work in a variety of groupings – as a whole class, individually, in pairs, and in small groups
  • Justify and explain their thinking
  • Acquire the appropriate vocabulary

Grade level scope and sequences are available upon request.

Our Community at Schechter
Our community here at Schechter is created by our connection to each other and to Judaism. At Schechter, we do not have all the same viewpoints or opinions about how to live life, practice Judaism, or affiliate politically. But community is not about sharing the exact same perspective as everyone else. Community is about having a safe environment in which everyone is able to share his or her own ideas without the fear that they will be judged or ridiculed.
